Sex crimes increased by 30% during 2024

During 2024, sexual crimes in Albania increased by almost 30% compared to the previous year.

The General Prosecutor's Office's annual report on crime in the country, submitted to the Parliament, highlights 161 investigations in total, which have sent 85 people as defendants to the courtroom.

The characteristic acts of this nature of crime are noted as "sexual or homosexual relations with minors" and "sexual harassment", and among the defendants is a girl, as well as a foreigner.  

According to the report, the most frequently encountered criminal offense last year was "theft of property," which accounted for 62% of criminal investigations in ordinary prosecutors' offices in the country. Narcotics-related offenses accounted for 10% of the total, while the least frequently encountered offense was "counterfeiting of currency and securities," at less than 1%.

Meanwhile, the top 5 most frequently encountered crimes were cybercrimes. Electronic interceptions, as a special investigative method, were used in 405 investigations. According to the annual report, a total of 2,361 mobile phones were intercepted last year for the purpose of investigating crimes against the person, narcotics, theft, or fraud.

The cities with the highest crime rate are Saranda, while the lowest is Berat. The report states that during 2024 the number of reports made by public servants increased, the number of reports made by citizens decreased, while medical personnel made zero reports. Referring to socio-demographic data, those most involved in crime are male, live in the city and have up to 9 years of education or secondary education.    (A2 Televizion)
