The phenomenon of thefts, especially those in apartments, has mostly occurred during the peak of the tourist season, when many families leave their homes to vacation on the coast or spend more hours outside their homes.
Data provided by the Tirana Police show that in the capital, the highest number of thefts occurred during the summer months, writes A2 CNN.
During 2024, a total of 1,299 incidents occurred, of which 80 were residential burglaries. The police were able to detect 49 of them and arrest 11 perpetrators.
Compared to 2023, the number of thefts has been decreasing, but detection is still low.
Mostly young people and repeat offenders of the criminal offense of theft use every space to climb over the walls of houses, windows or by breaking locks and doors, enter houses and steal sums of money, valuables or even household appliances.
Usually, homes targeted for burglary are kept under surveillance for several days and, after ensuring that the owners are not home, they intervene to steal.
A perpetrator of theft, according to the Criminal Code, is punished with a fine of up to 3 years in prison. And while the theft is committed in collaboration and more than once or with serious consequences, the punishment goes up to 10 years. But what is striking is the fact that most of the perpetrators of this criminal offense, even though they are arrested, are released after a few months, where they have benefited from the shortened trial. In quite a few cases, it has resulted that the perpetrators of the thefts have been teenagers or even young people.
