Former President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, moved his legal battle to regain his lost freedom to the Supreme Court on October 21. Through his lawyer, Genci Gjokutaj, Meta filed an appeal against the November 19, 2024 decision of the Special Appeal, which confirmed the security measure of "prison arrest" previously given to him.
Lawyer Gjokutaj said that he has asked the Supreme Court to annul the measure issued by the two lower courts, claiming that the former President of the Republic is being held in detention without any evidence.
"We have presented all the arguments, starting from the criminal detention that was made. Then for each episode, such as for lobbying in the US, we have clarified the declaration of Mr. Meta's assets, which he made nominally, as a person. Then also for CEZ DIA, a case based on false accusers, false witnesses and on evidence obtained in violation of the law."
According to the lawyer, among the arguments for Meta's release was the need to participate in the electoral campaign before May 11th.
"He has no conditions and no criteria to be in 'prison arrest', in the conditions of the second opposition leader and on the eve of the general elections."
Gjokutaj said that the Supreme Court must show integrity, which according to him it has not shown to date, and that after exhausting domestic courts, if necessary, they will also knock in Strasbourg.
The former President of the Republic is being investigated by SPAK for the criminal offense of "corruption of senior state officials", "money laundering" and "concealment and failure to declare assets". (A2 Televizion)
