The Supreme Court has set March 11 as the date for the first hearing of the appeal of former Democratic Party MP Ervin Salianj against his 1-year prison sentence.
Salianji filed a recourse with the High Court on December 3, 2024, to challenge the decisions of the Tirana Court of First Instance and the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction, which sentenced him to 1 year in prison for 'defamation'.
Salianji is currently serving his sentence in Fier prison, but has never admitted the charges brought against him, calling them political, which is why he is seeking freedom, writes A2 CNN.
Salianji was convicted for the 'Babale' case, where, together with journalist Jetmir Olldashi and Albert Veliu, known as 'Babale', they accused the brother of the former Minister of the Interior at the time, Agron Xhafaj, of drug trafficking.
Agron Xhafaj, after the charges in question, which stated that he was convicted in Italy for drug trafficking, went and served his sentence in the neighboring country.
But the Prosecution raised allegations that the audio recording with which Salianji and journalist Olldashi accused Fatmir Xhafaj's brother was untrue and deliberately fabricated.
