"School security has failed", expert Rexhepi: Security officers

Fights between school students are increasing, and it seems that the measures taken by the authorities are non-existent. Two days ago, another massive fight occurred between some students of the "Sami Frashëri" high school in Tirana. After finishing their lessons, a group of students clashed with hard objects in front of the school. Many of them ended up in the police, three of whom were minors, writes A2 CNN.

For criminalistics expert Artan Rexhepi, school security has failed. He proposes that in addition to the external territory of the school, the police should also have control over the internal premises, and that security officers should not be subordinate to the Ministry of Education.

"Schools should be transferred to the police. In my opinion, the corporal officers are a failed practice of the Ministry of Education. They should be transferred to the monitoring of the State Police. I guarantee you that the situation will improve several times over. Security officers should be treated as corporal officers. Let those who are installed be installed and receive the rights of the police," Rexhepi tells A2 CNN.

Rexhepi proposes that detectors be installed at the entrances of schools to check students, as well as changing the law on knife checks. According to him, parents of students caught with knives should be fined.

"The law on checks and knives needs to be changed. You can't treat a knife or illegal possession of a weapon the same as a firearm. This may seem like a liberal policy, but in fact it is not a liberal policy. But by reducing the penalty for knives, you can do much more frequent checks and you can give much more frequent punishment measures. Because you can't send a student to prison for 5 or 6 years for a knife, because it takes their life. If you impose a fine, you have the right to penalize the parent. A fine is much more painful, I think, than a mandatory appearance measure or a suspended sentence. If the child is a minor, you can penalize the parent. Or if you impose a fine of 200 or 300 thousand new lek, that parent will no longer let that child come armed to school."
