Luan Baçi defended in an interview for "Ditari" by Bruna Çifligu on A2 CNN, the amendment proposed by the Democratic Party to enable all Albanians living abroad the right to vote in the May 11 elections.
"We have proposed that it be possible for Albanians in the diaspora who do not have any Albanian means of identification to also vote. An Albanian who has a document, German, Italian, Greek, English, or in any EU country or in the USA, as long as he enters the border with that document and does any kind of action in Albanian territory, then why should we deny him the right to vote. Isn't a German passport as safe as an Albanian passport? In this regard, we see no obstacle except the malice of the Socialist Party," Baci explained the DP proposal.
The Blue Headquarters requests the registration of immigrants who do not have an identification document issued by the Albanian state, but can do so through the identity card of the country where they live and work.
The DP also demands a VKM or a decision from the CEC that would pave the way for Albanian emigrants to vote with expired identification. According to Baçi, something like this has happened in several previous elections and does not pose any problems, except for the lack of will from the majority, which according to him seeks to hinder the process.
"First, let me say that the interest of the DP is what it has been since the beginning, to make it possible for all Albanians to be free to vote and to express their will, a will that will not be alienated. The DP accepted an inappropriate electoral code, the changes that were made, only to enable the diaspora vote. The PS did its best to prevent such a thing and is continuously showing this. It has already started to create various, artificial obstacles to prevent the diaspora vote. Such as not allowing those Albanians of the Diaspora who have expired cards and passports to vote. The DP insists that this be resolved much more simply through a DCM or a CEC instruction, as this has been done in other elections, several times.
