The European Union is ready to speed up the membership of the Western Balkan countries in the bloc. The commissioner for enlargement, Oliver Varhej, said that the aim of Brussels is to open the first chapter of negotiations with Albania by the end of this year.
"Albania, as a negotiating country, has continued to make progress in reforms towards the EU", writes the official after a meeting with the Albanian foreign minister, Igli Hasani.
However, "Kathimerini" reported two days ago that Greece has refused to approve a joint letter from the 27 member countries of the European Union for the opening of negotiations for the first package of EU negotiation chapters with Albania. It is reported that this decision from Athens is related to the Beleri case.
Meanwhile, the meeting between the foreign ministers of the EU and those of the Western Balkans was held in the European capital.
"We want to advance the integration of the region in our decision-making process, including in our security and foreign policies, even before accession," announced the EU's high representative for foreign policy, Josep Borrell. (A2 Televizion)
