The European Union has reacted exclusively to A2 CNN, following the statements of Prime Minister Edi Rama regarding the Prosecution Office and the Special Court, made following the arrest of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj.
In an official response, the EU says that investigating corruption without pressure and interference is essential for the rule of law in our country.
"We are closely following the latest developments regarding the investigation against the Mayor of Tirana. However, the EU does not comment on ongoing judicial proceedings."
Reform in the justice sector and strengthening the rule of law in Albania are key elements in the European Union accession process.
The EU remains fully committed to supporting Albania's efforts in pursuing these reforms and to helping the country consolidate the efficiency, independence, accountability and professionalism of its institutions, as well as their compliance with EU standards, both in the law enforcement and justice sectors.
The specific role of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) and its independence in investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating complex corruption cases, without any attempt at political interference or undue pressure, are of essential importance for the consolidation of the rule of law in Albania", full reaction.
"Since Veliaj's arrest, Rama has commented on SPAK's actions several times, calling them strange, while insisting that the mayor was arrested without evidence," says the EU. (A2 Televizion)
