The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, congratulated Kosovo on its 17th anniversary of Independence. In a press conference on Monday, Berisha called February 17, 2008, the greatest event for the nation, after the Independence of Albania.
"This independence had the highest price, hundreds of thousands of lives, hundreds of thousands more ethnically cleansed from Kosovo, recognized apartheid and segregation, the most savage oppression, the genocide of blind Serbian nationalism in the middle of Kosovo. This independence is first and foremost a product of the invincible spirit of the citizens of Kosovo. But the independence of Kosovo has an architect, who succeeded in peacefully building the dream of their independent state among the Albanians of Kosovo, and this is Ibrahim Rugova. President Rugova, in a political genius, chose the peaceful path to promote the just cause of the citizens of Kosovo in all major chancelleries and major international institutions," said Berisha.
"Of course, Kosovo's independence could not have been achieved without the epic of the legendary commander Adem Jashari, the liberation war, the sacrifices and martyrdom of thousands of daughters and sons of Kosovo and the military intervention of the North Atlantic Alliance, the most powerful intervention after World War II. Kosovo has made great strides in these years of independence. Today, it is a democracy in consolidation, but an inspiring example for other countries in the region."
Berisha attacked Prime Minister Edi Rama, accusing him of betrayal of Kosovo. "Kosovo faced these years with a betrayal of official Tirana, its coordination with Belgrade, attempts at destabilization and all of these failed and in fact today Kosovo is an inspiration for all countries in the region, for the progressive increase of welfare, for the functioning of the rule of law. In this context, I once again repeat my heartfelt congratulations, the greatest respect for all those who made possible this greatest act in the history of the Albanian nation after the declaration of Albania's independence."
