Former President Ilir Meta, who has been behind bars since October last year, celebrates his 56th birthday this Monday.
The leader of the Freedom Party was congratulated through a Facebook post by the former Minister of Transport and his collaborator since the time of the LSI, Edmond Haxhinasto.
"Happy Birthday Ilir Metaj, and may you be free soon, courageous and patriotic leader, indomitable and visionary, an early comrade-in-arms to make Albania European and Albanians prosperous," Haxhinasto writes next to an old photo of the two.
Meta was arrested on October 21, 2024, by order of the Special Prosecution Office under suspicion of "corruption, money laundering, failure to declare and conceal assets."
SPAK emphasizes that Meta and his wife " in collaboration with each other, but also with other public officials, have been involved in the commission of several criminal offenses ."
Investigations against Meta began in 2019 in connection with the affair known as ÇEZ-DIA, which is related to the privatization of the energy distribution company and the collection of outstanding debts.
Three years later, another case was opened, following a report of undeclared payments worth thousands of euros by the party led by Meta for lobbying in the United States. The two files were later merged into one in 2024.
The Special Prosecution Office says that Meta, in his capacity as Minister of Economy, Trade and Energy, " used his authority and influence to intervene in the process of selecting the DIA company to collect CEZ's debts, even though it did not meet the legal and professional criteria ."
The file also states that Meta, as Speaker of the Parliament, and his wife as a deputy, in 2014 used their influence to introduce a company into the fiber optic market and then benefited from a percentage of the company's profits. (A2 Televizion)
