The President of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, has stated that the purpose of his arrest was to prevent him and the political entity he leads from competing freely in the May 11 elections.
Meta made the comments through a letter to the 'Debat' show with journalist Alba Alishani on A2 CNN, where he said that although he is in prison, he is more motivated than ever to fight with determination to restore dignity to Albanians.
The former President also added that he himself is leading the Freedom Party's campaign, together with other colleagues and the forums of this political entity.
"How much will being under arrest prevent you from campaigning on May 11? Who will lead the PL campaign?" was the question addressed to Meta.
"It is likely that the arrest was made for the electoral needs of the criminal organization to hinder me as President of the PL and the PL itself as an opposition force.
But this situation is only motivating for me and PL to fight with determination to restore the freedom and dignity of all Albanians who are not only physically in prison and who do not feel free in their country, in their work, in their business and in their lives.
May 11 is a historic date that calls on all honest and patriotic Albanians to unite all efforts so that their children do not remain without a homeland or do not feel alien and oppressed in the land of their ancestors. The Freedom Party and its campaign are led by me as its elected President last April in cooperation with all its colleagues and forums. Likewise, our program was made public on April 27, 2024.
"Also, the criteria for candidates for MPs have been approved in the most transparent manner by the National Steering Committee and each one will be evaluated according to their performance in this decisive battle with the Narcoregime," Meta writes, reports A2 CNN.
Meta also stated that the PL will work for the victory of the united opposition in the May 11 elections and added that the political entity he leads will have a dignified representation in the Assembly.
"Do you have a number of MPs that you expect after these elections?" Meta was asked.
"The main objective is the victory of the Opposition and undoubtedly the representation of the PL will be very dignified," Meta continued.
