In an interview with Bloomberg, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama calls US President Donald Trump "good for everyone" and sees his tough style as an opportunity for the European Union to wake up and regain its global power.
Rama, who is seeking a fourth term in the May 11 parliamentary elections, is a leftist leader who has built his political legacy on Albania’s integration into the EU by 2030, Bloomberg writes. But his comments about Trump, a controversial figure on the international stage, highlight the unusual role the former US president is playing in the Albanian electoral campaign.
"When Trump says that God saved him to make America great again, he is only telling half the story," Rama declared. "The other half is that He saved Trump also to wake up Europe and make it come to its senses."
DP campaign manager Chris LaCivita has attacked Rama for his ties to Soros, Bloomberg reports. In February, he posted a photo of Rama with Soros on the X platform, writing: “Puppet and puppet master.”
However, according to Bloomberg, Rama has built his own connections with Trump's inner circle. Jared Kushner, the former US president's son-in-law, has received preliminary approval for a $1.4 billion luxury resort project on the island of Sazan, a former military base in the south of the country. The project is one of the largest in the Balkans, alongside plans for a Trump hotel in Belgrade, A2 CNN reports.
Rama denied that the project was intended to score political points with the US administration. “At the time, it was not something that would score us points in Washington,” he said, noting that Kushner had visited the island in 2021, along with Ivanka Trump and Ric Grenell. “I am privileged to speak with Kushner and I would be very happy to call him a friend,” Rama said. “I don’t know if he calls me a friend, but I call him a friend.”
He also adds that the project with Kushner is not a gift, but a true partnership that requires agreement from both parties. "It's not like we gave him the island and that's it, it's a partnership," he emphasized. (A2 Televizion)
