The European Commission gives the green light to the agreement for immigrants between Albania and Italy. Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson was asked about the legal review of the memorandum and the EU's 2018 decision against the deals, after Brussels rejected a similar plan to transfer landed migrants to Albania.

"As for the current agreement between Italy and Albania, I can say that it is different from that of 2018. The initial assessment by our legal service is that it does not violate EU laws. So it is outside EU law", said Ylva Johansson, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs.

The agreement in question has received a lot of criticism from international human rights organizations, including the Council of Europe, which advised Albania and Italy not to proceed with their plan, expressing concerns about the legal and humanitarian side. Even politics in Italy has strong opposition to the memorandum signed by Prime Ministers Edi Rama and Giorgia Meloni on November 6. The opposition has written to the speaker of the lower house, Lorenzo Fontana, to request that "the prerogatives of the Parliament be fully respected".

They say that the memorandum on immigrants between Italy and Albania will not only not be ratified by the Parliament, as requested by Prime Minister Meloni, but it has not even been sent to the parliament or the senate. In its letter, the opposition complains, pointing out that the MPs and senators have been following the drafts exchanged online through messages for days, as well as news from the Albanian media regarding this issue, since they were not informed by the government about the details.
