Before the start of the plenary session, the Speaker of the Assembly, Elisa Spiropali, welcomed the adoption of the report on Albania by the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee. In a statement to the media from the Presidency of the Assembly, Spiropali said that the MEPs supported the closure of the negotiations by 2027, but also addressed several challenges.
"They supported Albania's objective of concluding negotiations by the end of 2027. It was a significant fact that deputies of the Albanian Parliament were present at that session, both from the majority and the opposition. A vital process for our country. I see this as evidence of a universally accepted truth in Albania that despite the various ideological divisions on the country's development model, when it comes to integration, the parliament has a common position. This remains a national priority that transcends political divisions. And they must maintain this. Our commitment is not political, but a scrupulous work calendar agreed with the EC, to travel responsibly and professionally."
Spiropali stated that the report emphasizes the need to accelerate reforms, the rule of law, the fight against corruption, and media freedom.
"This project concerns every cell of power and every citizen of this country. In no country is popular support for integration as high as 90% of citizens in Albania. No country has declared the EU the only destination of the future."
Another challenge highlighted in the report, according to Spiropali, is the need for constructive and inclusive political dialogue.
"The report highlights a number of challenges that we are aware of and need to address as soon as possible, including political polarization, confrontational rhetoric, and the need for constructive and inclusive political dialogue. The role of the assembly is paramount." (A2 Televizion)
