The European Parliament welcomes Albania's steps in the European integration process, not only with the successful conclusion of the screening process, but also with the opening of negotiation chapters in 2024. The annual report on the implementation of the Foreign and Security Policy, drafted by MEP David McCallister and adopted in plenary session by the European Parliament, sees positively Albania's ambition to quickly conclude the negotiations, although it draws attention to the shortcomings identified regarding the rule of law.
“The European Parliament underlines the need to further strengthen reforms in order to address the remaining shortcomings in key chapters, in particular the rule of law, the fight against corruption and organised crime; warns against undermining the work of independent institutions such as SPAK.”
In the few lines dedicated to Albania, special attention is paid to political life in the country and the role of the opposition in it.
“The European Parliament underlines the importance of sustainable political pluralism and a competitive opposition and calls for dialogue and constructive engagement between the majority and the opposition to overcome the strong political polarization in the country and to promote inclusive democratic processes that respect all parties, including the Greek, Roma and Egyptian minorities in the country.”
Regarding foreign and security policy, Albania is commended for its consistent stance fully aligned with the European Union. (A2 Televizion)
