Former Albanian President Alfred Moisiu has raised the alarm about the decline in patriotism and the lack of control over those in power. In an interview for the show “Off the Record” with Andrea Dangli on A2 CNN, Moisiu stressed that today the country is being used as a “mine of personal enrichment,” while shared values are fading.
"The people are not wrong. They can manipulate the will of the people, but they never make mistakes. The people are the measure. But the way we elect people, the way we follow the work... I may be a good person, but that doesn't mean I'm not corrupt. Society, the administration, should have control, but that's missing from us."
The former president emphasized that the vetting process should not be seen as a one-time scan, but should continue on an ongoing basis: "Vetting should continue. I'm not clear that these people who are there now, who convinces me that they can't make mistakes? They are people. The thing is how big the mistake is."
Moisiu expressed regret over the decline in the sense of national belonging: "Patriotism has declined. I understand that a person has to survive. If he doesn't have a job, some income, he has nothing to fight for. These things need to be looked at very carefully by politics."
Calling on the political class for greater responsibility, Moisiu spoke clearly about the consequences of greed: "Unfortunately, people today are melting Albania down to enrich themselves. There are as many examples as you want for this. The scales must begin to tip: How suitable are you to take this country forward, this people forward," Moisiu said on "Off the Record." (A2 Televizion)
