Italian newspapers and TV news talk less and less about migration issues. But according to the Italian media, when this is done, politics takes up too much space.
According to foreign media, immigration issues have made the XII Report of the Charter of Rome, entitled 'News of contrast', the symbolic word of the year 2024 to be "Albania".
This is due to a reference to the agreements with Tirana for the transfer of immigrants from the other side of the Mediterranean. The study was presented this morning by the researcher of the Pavia Observatory, Giuseppe Milazzo, at the headquarters of the foreign press, in Palazzo Grazioli, on the occasion of the International Day of Immigrants, writes A2 CNN.
According to Valerio Cataldi, the outgoing president of the Association "Carta di Roma", the year 2024 has been a period where "people disappear (again)", while politics remains "(again) in the center of attention". On the front pages of newspapers, coverage of migration issues has dropped by 42%. In total, the Italian press has published 4,511 titles on migration, which represents a 34% decrease compared to 2023. Avvenire newspaper holds the first place with 254 articles on the front page and 870 titles in total (an average of 2.9 titles per day, with a decrease of 17%). Evening TV editions, on the other hand, have reduced the number of news stories about migration by 41%.
From 2013 to 2024, no clear correlation was observed between the number of boat arrivals and the production of media headlines, indicating that the coverage of this topic is influenced by factors that exceed the reality of migratory pressure. Media attention on this topic is often intermittent, with peaks of reporting during June (due to two major landings and the death of Indian worker Satnam Singh) and between September and October (within the flow decree and the implementation of the agreement with Albania).
