Reduce the amount of salt in foods to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The advice comes from QSUT doctors, who, after a study conducted among our population, have confirmed that Albanians consume twice as much salt as the norms recommended by the WHO, writes A2.

"The results were expected. We consume 13.8 grams of salt in 24 hours, which according to the recommendations of the WHO and all international associations is twice what is recommended. The WHO recommends no more than 5 grams of salt in 24 hours," says the WHO.

This conclusion, according to doctors from the Clinic of Internal Medicine, is an indicator of the increased morbidity in our population from hypertension and cardiovascular problems. But, according to them, reducing salt would reduce the risk of stroke by 30%: "According to studies, a reduction of just 5 ml of mercury column in hypertension would reduce the risk of cardiovascular accidents in the brain by 30 percent of cases. On the other hand, it has been seen that we would only achieve this by reducing salt to less than 5 grams per day."

But where do they get the salt, besides what we use for cooking? "About 67 percent of the salt we consume comes from processed and semi-processed foods, which have salt added to certain foods. 15 percent of the salt we get from meals in restaurants and fast food. 13 percent of the salt we get from the amount added at home and 4–5% we get from the natural composition of foods."

The data on high salt consumption came after a study conducted for the first time on a sample of 150 people in two neighborhoods of Tirana, whose sodium levels in urine were measured over 24 hours. In the week of awareness for hypertension, doctors sounded the alarm that 1 in 3 people in Albania suffers from high blood pressure, otherwise known as the "silent killer".

Due to lifestyle and high salt consumption, hypertension is no longer a disease of the elderly, but also of young people. (A2 Televizion)
