Dwamena's cardiologist in Spain: Died as a result of a personal decision

The death of Raphael Dwamena has caused a stir in the sports media in recent days. The striker of Egnatia lost consciousness in the match against Partizan and lost his life after a heart attack.

The Ghanaian footballer, who has also played for Zaragoza and Levante in Spain, of his own free will decided to remove the defibrillator that had been inserted into his chest after suffering similar episodes. His cardiologist at the Real Zaragoza team, Dr. Antonio Asso spoke about the deceased player in a letter published in "Heraldo de Aragón".

Asso was one of the people who thought Dwamena should retire from football: "We managed to convince him of the urgent need to install a defibrillator, to at least guarantee his life, at the same time we advised him not to practice professional sports . He listened to us and after installing the defibrillator he left Spain. Sometimes he asked me for specific advice, which I answered with pleasure."

However, Asso was aware that Dwamena was not listening to his suggestions: "After some time I lost hope of influencing his decisions on the issue of health".

The defibrillator was responsible for saving the Egnatia player's life on one occasion, but the decision to remove it ended his life. "Dwamena died as a result of a personal decision that must be respected, but if the defibrillator had not been removed, he would still be alive today," Antonio Asso said. (A2 Televizion)
