Diego Maradona's former bodyguard, Julio Cesar Coria, has been arrested during the ongoing trial in connection with the death of the Argentine football legend.
Coria, 48, is accused of giving false testimony under oath during the trial of seven doctors accused of criminal negligence in their care of Maradona.
Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari said Coria lied when he said he had not communicated with Maradona's personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, before his death and that he had no friendly relations with him. However, WhatsApp messages showed that they had discussed Maradona's health and even planned a barbecue together.
Also, Coria initially did not mention in his statement that psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov had attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but later confirmed this in court.
Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, of a heart attack while recovering from surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain. Seven health professionals, including his personal doctor and psychiatrist, are facing charges of possible premeditated murder, a charge that could land them in prison for up to 25 years.
Prosecutors argue that the care Maradona received was grossly inadequate and that necessary medical protocols were ignored, describing his recovery environment as a "house of horrors."
The trial has attracted widespread public attention and is expected to last several months, with over 100 witnesses called to testify. Coria's arrest marks a dramatic turn in the legal process, adding to the tensions and complexity of the case as Maradona's family and fans seek justice for his death. (A2 Televizion)
