British actor and presenter Russell Brand has been formally charged by British authorities with at least one count of sexual assault. The news was confirmed by Scotland Yard, which said the charges are part of a wider investigation into alleged sexual harassment and abuse that occurred between 1999 and 2005.
According to the police, the investigation began after the publication of an investigative report carried out by the Sunday Times newspaper and Channel 4 television in 2023. In this report, four women made serious allegations against Brand, describing various situations of sexual violence and abusive behavior, some of which are alleged to have occurred in work contexts.
Brand, 49, known for numerous romantic relationships, including in the past with American pop star Katy Perry, has consistently denied all allegations and described them as part of a coordinated attack against him, emphasizing that every past relationship has been consensual.
He has been a well-known figure on British and American television, but in recent years has withdrawn from traditional media to focus on digital platforms and social networks, often with counter-current content and conspiratorial tones.
British authorities have announced that they have gathered sufficient evidence to proceed legally and have called on all victims or other witnesses to come forward, either directly or through women's protection organizations such as Rape Crisis.
