A 38-year-old woman has died in Thessaloniki, Greece, after a bomb she was carrying exploded in her hands. According to Greek police reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, while the woman was allegedly trying to plant the explosive device near an ATM.
The explosion also caused significant material damage, damaging several storefronts and parked vehicles in the area, writes A2 CNN. A senior police official told Reuters that "it appears she was carrying an explosive device and intended to place it near the bank. Something went wrong and the device exploded in her hands."
According to the Associated Press, the victim was known to police for her involvement in previous robberies. Greek authorities are investigating the possibility of her connection to left-wing extremist groups, which have been active in the past with similar attacks.
The incident comes less than a month after another explosion in Athens, where a bomb exploded near the offices of the Hellenic Train company. In that case, too, police received calls warning of a possible explosion from local media within 35 minutes, and the area was evacuated immediately after a suspicious bag was found.
Investigations into the Thessaloniki case are still ongoing, with authorities focused on identifying the victim's contacts and possible motives. Police have cordoned off the area and set up a security perimeter to gather the necessary evidence. (A2 Televizion)
