Vucic pardons 13 Serbian protesters, including students and professors

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has issued 13 pardons, including for students, professors and other citizens against whom criminal proceedings were conducted following their participation in recent protests.

The move comes two days after Vučić announced that he would pardon individuals involved in criminal proceedings after participating in the protests that followed the fatal collapse of the railway station shelter in Novi Sad, where 15 people lost their lives.

In a statement issued by the president's office, it is said that pardons have been granted to all those who have been arrested and charged for participating in the protests that took place in Belgrade, Novi Sad and other cities in Serbia.

The pardons include individuals accused of violating public order and peace, as well as damaging public and private property during protests.

According to the announcement from the Presidency, six students have been pardoned: DB from Novi Sad, MM from Novi Sad, MK from Novi Sad, IB from Pozhega, RS from Sremska Kamenica and MS from Zhabali.

Vučić has also pardoned a dean – NJ from Niš, and RJ from Novi Sad.

Also, four school principals were pardoned: BM from Shabac, ME from Bogatiqi, MI from Shabac, SMJ from Shabac, as well as a school assistant, VM from Prokuplje.

The pardon decisions have been submitted to the Ministry of Justice for further procedures, the January 29 announcement said.

The waves of protests, which have brought tens of thousands of citizens to the streets, were sparked by the collapse of the renovated railway station shelter on November 1, which left 15 people dead and two others seriously injured.

The students in the blockade have demanded that the authorities publish the full documentation on the station renovation, in order to determine criminal responsibility for the accident.

They also demand the prosecution of all attackers of students and professors during the protests following the accident in Novi Sad.

The President of Serbia declared on January 27 that all student demands have been met, while students are continuing their protests.

Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević resigned on January 28, following an attack on a group of students in front of the offices of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, and the mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Đurić, also resigned on the same day./ REL (A2 Televizion)
