A 55-year-old from Trieste, who suffered from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, has died after requesting what is described as "assisted suicide."
The death occurred on November 28 in the patient's apartment in Trieste. The news was announced by the Luca Coscioni Association, according to which, the 55-year-old is the first Italian to have completed the procedure provided by the Consultation with the "Cappato" decision, with the direct assistance of the National Health Service.
She is the third person followed by the association to have access to voluntary assisted dying in Italy, and the fifth to have received the green light.
According to the announcement, the woman underwent the procedures, assisted by a doctor.
The Court of Trieste expressed its opinion on the case.
"The lethal drugs and equipment have been provided by the NHS and a doctor identified by the health company, on a voluntary basis, has taken steps to support the required action within the scope and within the limits set by the preliminary injunction announced by the Court of Trieste on July 4 , and therefore without directly interfering in the administration of the drug, an action which remained exclusive."
