Secret Service agent protecting President Biden's granddaughter opens fire

A Secret Service agent protecting the granddaughter of US President Joe Biden opened fire on suspects attempting to break into a government vehicle on Sunday.

The agents, assigned to protect Naomi Biden, were out with her in the Georgetown neighborhood late Sunday evening when they saw the three people breaking a window of the parked SUV.

One of the agents opened fire, but no one was hit by gunfire, the Secret Service said in a statement, while the three men were seen fleeing in a red car.

"The incident is being investigated by the DC Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service," the service said in a statement.

The car was parked outside the home of President Biden's niece, according to anonymous sources cited by US media. She was not with the agents when the incident occurred, although the agents were on duty.

There is no evidence to suggest the suspects knew the vehicle was part of a protective detail for Mr Biden's niece.

Naomi Biden is the daughter of Hunter Biden and his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle and the president's great-granddaughter.

Washington has seen a significant increase in the number of car thefts this year. Police have reported more than 750 carjackings this year and more than 6,000 reports of stolen vehicles. (A2 Televizion)
