One in three children, or more precisely 739 million children worldwide, live in areas with severe water shortages.

The alarm is issued in a report of the UNICEF program of the United Nations regarding the effects of climate change. Insufficient amounts of drinking water and for hygiene services can further worsen this situation.

In the report published ahead of the COP28 climate summit, it appears that the vast majority of children who suffer from a lack of the necessary amounts of water are found in areas of the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. UNICEF's analysis shows that during 2022, 436 million children will face extreme levels of water scarcity, which has put their health, well-being and lives at risk.

It is even considered one of the leading causes of death among children under 5 from preventable disease. According to the report of the UN agency, climate change is worsening the relationship between the demand and the available amount of water in different areas of the world.

UNICEF recommends that under these circumstances, investments are made in the infrastructure for the provision of drinking water and for sanitary use, in order to protect children from the impact of climate change. Increased funding for child protection is also required, as currently only 2.4 percent of climate funding goes to child-related projects. (A2 Televizion)
