Another dark winter for Ukraine? Zelensky: Russia is preparing new attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is warning Ukrainians to prepare for new waves of Russian attacks against infrastructure as winter approaches, and said troops expected a furious offensive in the eastern theater of war.

Zelenskiy made the comments in a video message released on Sunday evening, a day after Russian forces launched their first missile attack on the capital Kiev in seven weeks.

"We are almost halfway through November and we must prepare for the fact that the enemy may increase drone and missile attacks against infrastructure. Russia is preparing for Ukraine, and here in Ukraine, all attention should be focused on defense, countering terrorists, and whatever Ukraine can do to survive the winter."

Last winter, Russia launched a campaign of airstrikes against hydropower plants and power grids, leaving regions around the country without electricity or heat.

The Minister of Energy stated that Ukraine has enough energy reserves to get through the winter, but the issue is how much the future attacks will affect supplies.

Authorities in Kiev report that Moscow has hit infrastructure 60 times in recent weeks, in a signal that the campaign of attacks may have already begun.

In his speech, Zelenski praised the heroic efforts of the troops who are defending Avdiivka, the eastern town under the pressure of the Russian advance since mid-October. According to a spokesman, attacks on the ruined town had eased over the past 24 hours, but were likely to intensify in the coming days. (A2 Televizion)
