After the return of the war in the Gaza Strip, Israel has also reignited the war in Lebanon. Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon were hit after three rockets were fired from that country towards Israel for the first time since a ceasefire was reached in November.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had instructed the Israeli Defense Forces to act forcefully against dozens of terrorist targets in Lebanon.
The Lebanese prime minister has urged the army to take steps to prevent the country from being dragged into a new war. However, the head of the Israeli defense forces, Eyal Zamir, stressed that the Lebanese state bears responsibility for violating the ceasefire agreement that ended 14 months of fighting with Hezbollah.
Local reports in Lebanon said artillery fire had been heard in some areas of the country, but Israel has not confirmed this. The ceasefire between the two countries has been fragile. Israel has carried out near-daily attacks on what it considers Hezbollah targets and has suggested it will continue to do so to prevent the group from rearming.
In addition, the Israeli army still controls five locations in southern Lebanon, in what the country's authorities say constitutes a violation of its sovereignty and the ceasefire agreement. Some 4,000 people have been killed in Lebanon, including many civilians, and over 1.2 million have been displaced as a result of the conflict that escalated after the start of the war with Hamas.
