Donald Trump's decisions to impose tariffs have been sharply criticized by French President Emmanuel Macron. In a reaction during a meeting with representatives of French businesses, Macron said that Trump's decision is brutal and inappropriate.
“The decision announced last night was both brutal and inappropriate. Inappropriate because you cannot fix trade imbalances by imposing tariffs. The basis of economic theory shows the opposite, especially since the imbalance does not take into account services, including digital services to name just one, if not others. The negative effect of tariffs will affect the American economy above all. And one thing is certain after last night: the American economy, and Americans, whether businesses or people, will emerge from this war weaker and poorer than yesterday. And we must reverse it. We must stand strong, because these decisions are not sustainable for the American economy itself. The American diagnosis is essentially correct but the response is wrong.
