US confirms death of US citizen in Ukraine, condemns Russian attacks

The United States condemned the Russian attack carried out overnight in Kiev, US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said on Tuesday, confirming the death of an American citizen in Ukraine.

"We are aware of last night's attacks in Kiev, which resulted in multiple casualties, including the tragic death of an American citizen. We condemn these attacks and express our condolences to the families of those affected," Bruce said at a press conference.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Tuesday that the American citizen, a 62-year-old man, had died as a result of the attacks in the city, without giving further details.

Russia razed part of an apartment block in Kiev on Tuesday, marking the deadliest attack in the Ukrainian capital this year, after hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles killed at least 16 people and wounded 134 others.

Ukrainian officials have declared Wednesday a day of mourning.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described the attack as one of the most horrific in the capital since the start of the war in 2022.

Russian military troops are making efforts to penetrate deep into eastern Ukraine and have opened a new front in the Sumy region, in the northeast, despite calls for a ceasefire from US President Donald Trump.

The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia by hitting the country's economy with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes. REL (A2 Televizion)
