French President Emmanuel Macron spoke today at the G7 summit taking place in Canada, where he warned against any attempt to change the regime in Iran through military means.
According to international news agencies Reuters and AFP, Macron said that such a change would bring "chaos" to the region and further worsen the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.
"It would be a big mistake for a regime change in Iran to be achieved through military force," Macron said during his statement, stressing that the wisest alternative is to return to the negotiating table on Iran's nuclear program, A2 CNN reports.
The French president also stressed the essential role of the United States in this process. "I believe we need the United States of America to take the lead in bringing all parties back to the negotiating table," he declared.
Macron's stance comes at a time of high international tension and efforts to avoid further escalation of the crisis in the region, especially following clashes between Israel and Iran and growing uncertainty over nuclear weapons.
What is happening between Israel and Iran?
• Israel and Iran have been exchanging attacks for five days, with civilians in the conflict zones facing waves of shelling. At least 224 people have been killed in Iran since the conflict began. In Israel, the death toll has reached 24.
• US President Donald Trump has said he is seeking a “real end” to the conflict, not just a ceasefire, after leaving the G7 summit early. Trump denied he was leaving to work on a peace deal and said “something much bigger” is afoot. He has also called on Iranians to evacuate Tehran.
• Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that he believes Israel's strikes have significantly damaged Iran's nuclear program. Israel has struck three major Iranian nuclear facilities, although the extent of the damage remains unclear. (A2 Televizion)
