Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, experts: EU should follow Trump's policy

The course of the dialogue with the new American administration remains unclear. Some expect greater involvement of US President Donald Trump and his team in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, others estimate that it is still too early to say that the United States will have a new approach to the dialogue. Former diplomat Blerim Canaj tells KosovaPress that the role of the US in the dialogue will depend on the relations that are created between the Trump administration and official Brussels.

"The European Union will be forced to move in line with the United States of America. Donald Trump's cabinet, namely the Republicans, are not those who function like the Democrats, 'pull and don't cut', but they know how to cut things quickly and of course according to need... It matters a lot who will govern Kosovo. It matters what kind of communication there will be between Kosovo and the US. I do not rule out the possibility that Donald Trump and Richard Grenell will say that we are continuing where we left off in 2019."

On the other hand, political scientist Seb Bytyqi tells KosovaPress that it is still unclear how the Trump administration will approach the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue. He adds that it remains to be seen whether the US will directly engage in the dialogue, or whether this process will continue to be in the hands of the EU.

"It is still too early to talk about a new approach. We should wait to see evidence of a new approach... We are in a period of elections, a transitional period. So until this period ends there cannot be any significant step in the dialogue. Therefore, we should wait for a while to verify whether there is a new approach... There may also be new elections in Serbia and this transitional electoral period will be extended even further."

The European Union has been mediating the dialogue for the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations since the beginning of this process in 2011. The parties have reached several agreements, but few of them have been implemented. Under the mediation of the EU, the Brussels Basic Agreement and the Ohrid Annex were also reached in 2023, but so far there has been no implementation. (A2 Televizion)
