On the 55th anniversary of Earth Day 2025, the Frontiers Planet Prize selected 19 scientist laureates who have come up with innovative and actionable ideas for protecting the Earth.
These scientists have proposed new, simple-to-implement, and high-impact solutions to protect the Earth and stop environmental degradation.
The winners were selected from thousands of researchers and scientists from around the world. At various stages of their academic careers, they have published scientific articles on revolutionary and easily implementable solutions to prevent the crossing of so-called planetary boundaries.
The jury of about a hundred independent experts is chaired by Johan Rockström, a Swedish ecologist internationally known for his work on planetary sustainability, who in 2009 was the first, along with 28 other scientists, to elaborate the concept of planetary boundaries.
The goal is to stop the crossing of these limits, within which our planet can function sustainably. So far, 6 of the 9 limits have been exceeded, including climate change, chemical pollution and biodiversity loss.
Proposed solutions include: Conserving forests through increased biodiversity, zero-emission cities that use nature to reduce pollution, protecting atolls from sea level rise through local measures, carbon sequestration, and improving agriculture and livestock. (A2 Televizion)
