Israel bombs Gaza, Qatar and Egypt present new ceasefire proposal

Israeli forces continue to bombard Gaza, killing at least 14 Palestinians in pre-dawn airstrikes. Among the casualties are two women and two children, while nine people were killed in an attack on a house near the Sikka roundabout in Khan Younis.

An Israeli delegation has arrived in Cairo, Egypt, to meet with mediators and seek progress in negotiations with Hamas for a ceasefire and the release of hostages from Gaza.

The delegation met with senior Egyptian officials. According to local media reports, mediators from Qatar and Egypt proposed a draft ceasefire lasting between five and seven years, a formal end to the war, a full withdrawal of the Israeli military from Gaza and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised "a strong response" to Yemen's Houthis after the rebels claimed more attacks on Israel, as well as on US aircraft carriers in the Red Sea.

Meanwhile, Palestinians in Gaza are mourning the death of Pope Francis, who had maintained close and consistent video contact with the territory's small Christian community throughout the ongoing war.

At least 51,240 Palestinians have been confirmed killed and 116,931 wounded in Israel's war in Gaza since it began 18 months ago.

The Gaza Government Media Office updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of people missing under the rubble were presumed dead. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks, and more than 200 were taken prisoner. (A2 Televizion)
