US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with bombings and new economic tariffs if Tehran does not reach a deal with Washington on its nuclear program, writes A2 CNN. In a telephone interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump said that US and Iranian officials are holding talks, but did not provide further details.
"If they don't make a deal, there will be bombing," Trump declared. "But there is a possibility that if they don't make a deal, I will put a second round of tariffs on them, just like I did four years ago."
During his first term (2017-2021), Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 deal between Iran and world powers, which imposed strict limits on Tehran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. He also reimposed tough sanctions on Iran. As a result, the Islamic Republic has exceeded agreed limits, escalating its uranium enrichment program.
Iran has so far rejected Trump's warning to reach a deal or face military consequences.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, quoted by the state news agency IRNA, said on Thursday that Tehran had responded through Oman to a letter sent by Trump, in which he urged Iran to negotiate a new nuclear deal.
Western powers accuse Iran of secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons by enriching uranium to high levels of purity, beyond what would be justifiable for a civilian nuclear energy program.
On the other hand, Tehran insists that its nuclear program has only peaceful purposes and is dedicated exclusively to energy production. (A2 Televizion)
