The Ecuadorian government on Sunday extradited the country's biggest drug trafficker, Adolfo Macias, known by the nickname "Fito" in the United States, a month after he fell into the hands of authorities.
In 2024, he escaped from a maximum security prison.
The United States Attorney's Office released the indictment against him in April.
Described as the leader of the "Los Choneros" gang, Macias is accused of cocaine distribution, conspiracy and armed violence, including weapons smuggling.
A letter issued by the US Department of Justice said Macias will appear in federal court on Monday.
This Ecuadorian citizen, once a taxi driver turned crime boss, agreed in court a week ago to be extradited to the United States to face charges.
He is the first Ecuadorian citizen to be extradited from his country since the new law came into effect a year ago.
