The Israeli military says it has killed a “number of terrorists” during a military operation in the West Bank. The Israeli military said on Sunday that it had carried out three airstrikes the day before. One of those killed was reportedly released as part of the first ceasefire in the war between Israel and the radical Islamist Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip in November 2023.
Eyewitnesses reported a major operation around Tubas and Tamun. An AFP journalist observed the army blocking exits to the Faraa refugee camp and entering homes. Drones were also seen in the sky. The Israeli army announced it had expanded its "anti-terror operation to five" towns.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said Saturday evening that five people had been killed in Israeli strikes in the Jenin area. The Israeli military said it had attacked "armed terrorists."
Last month, the Israeli army launched a major offensive in the West Bank aimed at driving out Palestinian militant groups from the Jenin area. Jenin is known as a stronghold of Palestinian militias. The war in the Gaza Strip, sparked by a major attack by the radical Islamist Hamas and allied groups on Israel on October 7, 2023, has also sparked violence in the occupied West Bank. A ceasefire has been in effect in the Gaza war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas since January 19.
Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu has traveled to meet with US President Donald Trump, seeking to strengthen ties with Washington after tensions with the previous White House administration over the war in Gaza. Netanyahu, who faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes in Gaza, had strained relations with Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden, and has not visited the White House since returning to office in late 2022.
