Ferry sinks in Indonesia, 4 dead, dozens injured

At least four people have died and 29 others have been rescued after a ferry sank en route to the Indonesian island of Bali. "The ferry's cargo figures are 53 passengers and 12 crew members," the Surabaya-based rescue agency said in a statement, adding that the vessel sank at around 11:20 p.m. Initial reports suggest a leak in the engine room caused the vessel to capsize.

The ferry sank about half an hour after leaving the port of Ketapang in East Java province late Wednesday evening. It was heading for the port of Gilimanuk in Bali, a journey of about 50 kilometers. Nine ships, including two tugboats and two ships, as well as local fishermen and people on land, are taking part in the search for the missing.

Waves up to 2 meters high and darkness hampered operations overnight, but a rescue official said improved sea and weather conditions made it easier to continue the search on Thursday morning. (A2 Televizion)
