Amid growing concerns about the expansion of the conflict in Ukraine, Germany takes measures and announces the creation of a new division that will deal exclusively with territorial defense. According to the decision, all reserve units will come under the direct command of the army.
The reorganization will take effect in April and will increase the number of German divisions, which include units of 20,000 troops, to 4 such, without increasing the total number of approximately 180,000 German troops. The western military alliance NATO is on maximum alert, the highest since the Cold War, with a number of officials, including German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, saying a Russian attack on their borders could happen within 4 years.
With this new move, Germany improves its territorial defense command structures at a time when Berlin accuses Moscow of acts of sabotage against its own critical infrastructure, in a further escalation of tensions between the two countries.
Russia denies the allegations. So far, Berlin has only 3 divisions that NATO could call upon in the event of a conflict, whose main role would be to protect the alliance by confronting opponents right on the front lines.
The 4th Division would be tasked with the defense of Germany within its borders, including the defense of infrastructure such as ports, railways and supply lines. Germany is strengthening its role as a key strategic hub in any potential conflict with Moscow, with tens of thousands of reinforcements from other NATO allies expected to be deployed east through Germany.
