22-year-old stabbed to death during carnival celebration in Sardinia

A 22-year-old man has died after being stabbed in the chest at the height of an argument that broke out during a carnival party at night in Bari Sardo, in Ogliastra. Italian media report that when emergency services arrived, nothing more could be done for the 22-year-old, Marco Mameli, from Ilbono (Nuoro). Another young man was injured and taken to the emergency room. The Carabinieri are investigating the murder and are looking for the person responsible.

The murder took place on Via Santa Cecilia, in the historic center of Bari Sardo, a coastal town of just under 4,000 inhabitants in central-eastern Sardinia. Marco Mameli, a 22-year-old worker, was spending the Saturday of Carnival with a group of friends. After the traditional parade of allegorical floats, the party continued through the streets of the city center. Here the young man and his friends got into a fight with other local youths.

Someone pulled out a knife and Mameli was fatally stabbed in the chest. Police interviewed several witnesses during the night and are now on the trail of the person responsible for the murder.

"It is not possible to die at the age of 22 at a carnival party. Farewell Marco, the entire town of Ilbono mourns your tragic death," commented Ilbono mayor Giampietro Murru. (A2 Televizion)
