US Defense Secretary Mark Rutte has sought to ease tensions following the debate between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump. In a statement to the media, Rutte urged Zelenskyy to tone down his tone towards Trump and be grateful for the military aid. Meanwhile, Rutte also urged Europe to increase military spending.
"I thought it was extremely unfortunate. I had contact with Zelenskiy several times about this and I said, 'You're going to have to see how you rebuild your relationship again with the Americans and with the American president. Because we have to move forward together.' What I said to Zelenskiy is, 'Look at what Trump has done in the past.' He made Javelins available to them in 2019. Ukraine had no chance against the Russians in February 2022, because Europe had not given anything. The Trump presidency, you have to take credit. I also had a long phone call with President Trump on Thursday and a lot of contact with the American government when it comes to NATO. (They show) total, total commitment. Also on Article 5, the article that says an attack on one is an attack on all. But (they also have) expectations. And the expectation is that, guys in Europe, you fall behind in terms of payments, it's fair if Europe pays more than it does now." What he "What (Trump) is trying to do is to achieve peace in Ukraine. What he has done is to make that opening towards Russia. I think it was a good step. That had to happen, it would happen sooner or later. Now we have to make sure that we work very well together," Rutte said, A2 CNN reports . (A2 Televizion)
