Aalborg Zoo in Denmark has launched a special campaign, asking citizens to donate healthy but unwanted pets to be used as food for its predators. The animals accepted include chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and horses.
According to the official announcement, small animals are euthanized professionally and humanely by trained personnel. In the case of horses, they must have a veterinary passport and not have received treatment for illness in the last 30 days. Horse donors can also benefit from tax breaks, in accordance with Danish law.
The zoo emphasizes that this is a way to provide a more natural diet for predators like lions and tigers, by offering them meat as it would in the wild. This helps maintain their natural behavior and health.
The zoo's deputy director, Pia Nielsen, said that this practice is well-known in Denmark and is appreciated by a large part of the public as a responsible way to give beneficial use to animals that for various reasons can no longer be kept by their owners. (A2 Televizion)
