Earthquake causes mine collapse in Chile, casualties and missing

One miner has died, five are missing and nine others have been injured after a 4.1 magnitude earthquake in Rancuaga, Chile caused a collapse at the El Teniente copper mine.

Chile's state-owned mining company, Codelco, announced the news: "With sadness and solidarity with the affected families, we announce the passing of our colleague Paulo Marín Tapia, of the Salfa Montajes company, who worked on the Andesite Project."

Codelco said it immediately suspended activities in the affected area and began an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

El Teniente is the largest underground copper deposit in the world and Codelco's main mine. (A2 Televizion)
