India said its "Operation Sindoor" hit "terror infrastructure" in both Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir, a major escalation that pushed the rival neighbors to the brink of all-out war. Pakistan said the attack killed at least eight people, including children.
Pakistan said it shot down five Indian Air Force fighter jets and a drone. India has not confirmed the losses of its fighter jets. Pakistani security sources said three of the five downed planes were Rafale fighter jets - prized assets of the Indian Air Force purchased from a French manufacturer.
Wednesday's escalation comes after gunmen massacred 26 civilians, mostly tourists, in Indian-controlled Kashmir last month. India accused Pakistan of involvement, which Islamabad denied.
Authorities in Indian-administered Kashmir have ordered the evacuation of citizens from areas they consider dangerous, as the conflict between New Delhi and Islamabad escalates.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has directed districts to shift villagers from “vulnerable areas to safer places.” Accommodation, food and medicines will be provided to the evacuated citizens, the Lieutenant Governor’s office in X said.
India, which has a Hindu majority, and Pakistan, which is mainly Muslim, each control parts of Kashmir but claim it in full and have fought three wars over the territory. (A2 Televizion)
