Conclave convenes, first vote today for election of new Pope

Everything is ready for the Conclave that will elect the 267th Pope in the history of the Catholic Church. This Wednesday, 133 cardinal electors from 66 different countries and all continents will enter the Sistine Chapel, 53 are European and 17 are Italian. And after the doors are closed with the phrase "extra omnes", "all outside", the Conclave, called to elect the new Pope, will begin. The first smoke is expected at 7:00 pm, which according to Italian media will certainly be black, since a Pope has never been elected immediately, since in the first vote.

Each cardinal's ballot consists of two votes, the first within 12:00 (with the first vote at 10:30) and the second within 19:00 (with the first vote at 17:30). If it is black, the smoke can only be made at the end of the two ballots, that is, either at 12:00 or at 19:00. If it is white, the smoke can be made at any stage, that is, even at the end of the first two mini-votes (that is, at 10:30 or at 17:30).

The fastest elected Pope in history was Pius XII, who ascended to the papal throne in 1939 after just three votes. All the cardinals who will take part in the vote arrived in Rome on Monday, and work on the Sistine Chapel has been completed.

The latest General Congregation met on Tuesday. “In a divided world, a Pope who unites” is the compass that, according to the cardinals, will guide them in electing the 267th Pope in the history of the Catholic Church.

In this congregation, the cardinals addressed issues of abuse and the Vatican's accounts, but above all they noted Francis' legacy against all wars. (A2 Televizion)
