80 years after World War II, Americans and Europeans believe that an even more devastating third global conflict could erupt within a decade, due to tensions with Russia.

This is the conclusion reached by a YouGov poll, conducted just before the 80th anniversary of Victory Day over Nazi Germany. Many believe that the events that took place before and after World War II are still important today and should be brought to the attention of younger generations, writes A2.

Between 41% and 55% of respondents in five Western European countries (Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain) said another war was very likely or possible within the next 5 to 10 years; a view shared by 45% of Americans. Most of them said they expected the new conflict to involve nuclear weapons, and that World War III would lead to more loss of life than the one in the 1940s.

Most, from 66% in Italy to 89% in Britain, said they expect their country to be involved in such a war, but only a few believe their armed forces would be able to defend themselves. In contrast, 71% of Americans have confidence in the United States military.

Russia is seen as the main cause of a Third World War by most citizens in the West and the US, followed by Islamic terrorism.   (A2 Televizion)
