Kisses, firm handshakes, and then the doors of the White House swung open. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was welcomed with great honors in Washington by US President Donald Trump.
He first gave him a tour of the world's most powerful building before serving him his last dinner before peace. Trump confirmed that all sides were accepting his proposal for a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, adding that talks in Qatar were going very well and that Hamas wanted an end to the 21-month war. His mediation was rewarded by Israel.
“The President has brought us great opportunities. He created the Abraham Accords. He is creating peace as we speak, in one country and one region after another. I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter that I sent to the Nobel Prize Committee. We nominate you for the Peace Prize, which is well deserved, and you should receive it,” said Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel.
This greatly excited the American president, who emphasized that it is of great importance that the proposal comes from Israel. But peace seems to have a heavy price tag for Palestine, as Trump has not signaled that he will support a two-state solution to the eternal conflict.
"I don't know how to answer that. You have the greatest man in the world to answer the eternal two-state question. Go ahead, give your most honest answer," Trump said.
"I think the Palestinians should have all the power to govern themselves, but none of that power should threaten us, and that means that some powers, like general security, will remain in our hands," Netanyahu said.
Trump also trusted Netanyahu with the answer on the issue of displacing Palestinians from Gaza.
"I think President Trump had a great vision. It's called free choice, you know, if people want to stay, they can stay, but if they want to leave, they should be able to leave. It shouldn't be a prison, it should be an open place and give people free choice. We are working with the United States very closely to find places that want to give the Palestinians a better future. We are getting closer to finding some places," the Israeli prime minister said.
Among the topics Trump spoke about was his approval of lifting sanctions on Iran, as he said, to give the country the opportunity to rebuild itself and leave behind the call for "death to America." The US leader confirmed that Tehran is seeking talks with Washington to sign an agreement. Trump also spoke about the other conflict between Russia and Ukraine, after realizing that President Vladimir Putin is not seeking peace. The US president confirmed that he will send more weapons to help Kiev, to defend itself from aggression. (A2 Televizion)
