Israeli forces are operating freely over Tehran's airspace after eliminating many of Iran's air defense systems, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.
“We have established freedom of airspace from western Iran to Tehran,” IDF spokeswoman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said on Saturday, according to A2 CNN. “Our air force pilots flew for about 2.5 hours over Tehran, while our drones are in action 24 hours a day, surveying the area and carrying out strikes and gathering intelligence,” he added.
Air superiority allowed Israel to attack Iran on Friday, Defrin said. He also explained that about 70 Israeli jets struck 40 targets around the Iranian capital overnight.
What is happening now?
• Iran launched a new wave of missiles toward Israel early Saturday, capping a night of explosions and mutual attacks between the two countries that caused devastation in Tel Aviv and Tehran.
• The long-running conflict between Iran and Israel has escalated after an unprecedented Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear and military targets on Friday morning, killing several of the country's top leaders, raising fears of a wider regional war.
• According to Israeli authorities, three people were killed and dozens more were injured in Iranian attacks. Iran has reported at least 78 killed and 320 injured in Israeli attacks, most of them civilians.
• The Israeli defense minister declared on Saturday that the residents of Tehran "will pay a heavy price" and that the Iranian capital "will burn" if Iran continues with missile attacks. (A2 Televizion)
