Iran has flown its largest drone for the first time, named Gaza, in honor of the Palestinian enclave that has been devastated by war and Israeli bombs over the past 15 months.

Previously, the drones were called Shahed 149, but now they will be known, even in the new version, as Gaza drones. One such drone carries 12 bombs and, according to the Revolutionary Guard, will be used for border operations.

The combat drone, dubbed "Gaza," was unveiled by Iran's Revolutionary Guard on May 21, 2021. The unmanned aerial vehicle can fly in full autonomy for 35 hours.

The Guards commander, Major General Hossein Salami, said in a statement at the time that the drone was named “Gaza” in honor of the people “who live in that land and resist the Zionist attack and aggression.”

Blocked from many international suppliers, Iran has become a major drone manufacturer, often using technology taken from captured American drones. (A2 Televizion)
