US President Donald Trump thwarted an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Al Khamenei, according to two US officials.
"Have the Iranians killed any Americans yet? No. Until they do, we shouldn't even be talking about going after the political leadership," Reuters quoted one of the officials as saying.
According to them, US authorities were in constant contact with officials in Israel in the days before it launched Operation "Rising Lion" in an attempt to curb Iran's nuclear program.
According to regional media reports, Khamenei has been hiding in an underground bunker northeast of Tehran since the attacks began on Friday.
Sources indicate that he is in a bunker with his family in Lavizan. It is said that Israel would not have killed him on the first night of the operation to give him a last chance to completely abandon the nuclear program, but that Trump had thwarted the plan to assassinate him.
In a statement on Sunday, Trump said that Israel and Iran must reach a deal, and that he will be the one to make it happen.
"I hope there will be an agreement. I think the time has come for an agreement and we'll see what happens. I think there's a good chance."
Trump has previously suggested that Russia and President Putin could mediate to end the war between the two countries, even as he himself continues his aggression against Ukraine. However, Iran has told Qatar and Oman that it is not open to negotiating a ceasefire while it continues to be under Israeli attack.
In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Netanyahu stressed that the operation was aimed at curbing the nuclear program but that it could result in regime change.
"We will do everything to eliminate the existential threat from Tehran ," were Netanyahu's words. (A2 Televizion)
